Giclée Prints (pronounced zhee-klay) are hi-end ink jet prints.
Images are created from high resolution digital scans of original art (or in the case of the Port Blakely prints, digital art) and printed with archival quality inks onto various substrates including canvas or fine art papers. The giclée printing process provides better color accuracy than any other means of reproduction.
My prints are being done by Darryl Schmidt of Art Capture and he uses an Epson ink jet printer with a resolution of 1440 dpi . Not long ago offset lithography was the primary way fine art prints were generated bit that process used only four colors (sometimes 6) and had a resolution of 300 dpi at the most. It required printing all of the edition at one time leading to storage issues whereas with giclées your print is made when you order it.
The quality of these prints is quite impressive and the colors are rich and vibrant. All of this makes for a fine art print that the collector will treasure for a lifetime. The cost is higher than offset prints but that is more than compensated for by the increase in quality. It is also reflected in much smaller limited edition runs keeping the value and desirability high.
It is a great way to have quality art in your home for a reasonable price and support artists at the same time. So support the arts and buy a print! |
