My name is Ron Crabb, and I have been in the entertainment industry since 1984 when I began working as an illustrator and designer of on-air graphics at KABC-TV in Los Angeles. It was there that I was introduced to the Quantel Paintbox and the rapidly expanding world of computer generated imagery. Motion graphics design and animation were the obvious next steps and from the late eighties through the nineties I was priviledged to work with some of the most prestigious television design and effects firms in Hollywood such as: Pittard Sullivan, 3 Ring Circus, Ring of Fire, Milne Effects, and Ignite Creative to name only a few. The projects included TV station graphics packages, main titles for TV shows, print design, and matte paintings for commercials and promos.
I've been fortunate to have recieved a number of awards from the Broadcast Design Association, Telly Awards, and the Houston Film Festival, as well as a couple of Emmy nominations for main title design.
During this same time period galleries in Arizona and Colorado were displaying my fine art, and I had a number of loyal collectors of my oil paintings.
In 2001 I decided to capitalize on my photorealistic abilities to a greater degree and entered the world of film matte painting and concept work. My first film was “X Men 2” working at the Hollywood Cinesite effects facility.
During the completion of “X Men 2” Cinesite decided to close down the Hollywood division of their special effects company. I then began to work as a freelance matte painter and concept artist. I have worked on many films with Christov Effects including “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen”, “Matrix 3”, “Last Samurai”, “Constantine”, “The Chronicle of Riddick”, “Cat Woman”, “Racing Stripes” and “The Shaggy Dog”. I also work extensively with other companies such as Ring of Fire, having done “Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow”, “Alex and Emma” and, most recently, “The Bucket List” with them. I also still work in television effects with Ring of Fire and Milne Effects among others.
I am freelance and work from my studio in the Puget Sound area of Washington State and globally via the internet! Please feel free to inquire about how I may be able to help you with your project!
