Motion Graphics is the marriage of graphic design and animation although it often times goes beyond that into writing, directing, set design, lighting, 3D animation, cell animation, and more. It is therefore a challenging field of work for an artist and requires that all of the artist's skills be accessed quickly to meet the demanding time constraints of client air dates.
My introduction to motion graphics came through KABC-TV in Hollywood, California during the 1984 Olympic Games and for the next 18 years it was the main staple of my career. I experienced the excitement of emerging technology and the pleasure of the company of some of the best talents in the business.
Working in this specalized area of art has broadened my skills in every other area of art that I pursue by teaching me about movement, composition and color in ways I would never have experienced had I not had the priviledge of working in this very demanding industry.
Conversely, my background as a painter allowed me to bring to animation on oftentimes more “illustrated” look that someone trained strictly in design may not have the inclination to try.
